The Spread of Perspective, continued

In addition to these three early Renaissance artists, many others used perspective -- Ghiberti and Bellini, to name just a few.
Piero della Francesca, Leonardo da Vinci, and Albrecht Durer were all theorists as well as practicioners.
Both Piero della Francesca and Albrecht Durer published what were in essence math text books!

Over the next four centuries, perspective continued to spread and to flourish -- right up until the end of the eighteenth century:

And then came the 20th century, with cubists, futurists, constructivistsm Dadists, minimalists, and so on. They said, in effect "this is not a window! Its a piece of canvas with paint on it."
And so pictures got flat - so flat that art critics even argued over the thickness of the paint, and some artists thinned their oils with turpentine to eliminate even that thickness. And perspective was dead, at least for the avante-guarde, although illustrators and other artists used it as before.
