The Spread of Perspective (continued)

• Masaccio:

  Masaccio's first known painting, painted some 2-7 years after Brunelleschi's experiment and before Alberti's treatise, shows no sign of perspective.

  However, three other paintings, all done in the last four years of his short life (he was only around 27 when he died) do show perspective -- and these are the works he's most famous for.

  We've already talked about his "Trinity":

  His use of perspective is clearest in his frescos for the Brancacci Chapel in Florence. Here's one of the scenes:

  This painting uses perspective for narrative focus, by having the vanishing point at Jesus' head.
